How to correctly introduce yourself
Having good introduction etiquette is vital if you wish to create a good impact; it is said that we make up 93% of our minds about someone within the first 7 seconds of meeting them. We do not get a second chance to make a positive first impression and so the way we greet someone along with how we dress and carry ourself all goes into creating our persona.
The correct, formal way to introduce ourselves is ‘Hello, Your Full Name, How Do You Do?”. This is a rehtorical question and the correct response is “Full Name, How Do You Do?’. You may feel that this sounds a little stiff to begin with but it is absolutely correct in the corporate world and socially when you are meeting someone for the first time. You can replace “Hello” with “Good Morning/Afternoon” for a slightly less formal feel if the situation demands.
A phrase that should not be used is “Nice/Pleased To Meet You” as you do not know if it is nice to meet them if you do not know them! The only time a variation of this phrase may be used is in the context of “It Is Nice To Meet You At Last’ if perhaps you have been liaising over email in a business context or maybe it is the partner of someone you know well socially, when the formal greeting would feel out of place.
Your greeting should be delivered at the same time as you shake hands.
